Exercise improves memory and thinking through both direct and indirect means (better sleep and less stress). The benefits of exercise come from its ability to reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation, stimulate the growth of healthy brain cells, and the growth of blood vessels in the brain.
Studies show that the part of the brain responsible for memory and thinking (prefrontal cortex and medial temporal cortex) have greater volume in people who exercise compared to those who don’t.
